Greek Police Strengthen Security After Demonstrations Targeting Israel Cruise Ship

Hellenic officials have significantly increased safety arrangements at multiple key harbors in an attempt to keep demonstrators from approaching a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day Mediterranean journey.

Recent Demonstrations Trigger Enhanced Security

The security reinforcement at the Peloponnesian ports followed recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata recently. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after local residents held rallies on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," remarked Christina Lada who participated in the Kalamata demonstration. "Innocent, unarmed people are being fatally injured."

Passenger Experience and Public Sentiment

From the upper deck, tourists observed as crowds in Kalamata yelled: "You require the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who spent the summer organizing anti-war protests throughout Greece, declared: "Citizens of Israel who approve of the policies of their government aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Relations

Constantine Filis noted: "Due to close location and our longstanding relationships with the Arab nations, the average Greek is more responsive to what is happening in Gaza than the typical European from central or northern regions."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a complex circumstance," he elaborated. "Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for most European states."

Economic and Travel Implications

National figures reveal that over 600,000 tourists from Israel visited Greece in 2024, with projections of increased visitation this year. This substantial influx emphasizes the much-improved relationship between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Partnership and Regional Factors

Regarding Hellenic administration, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also offers the additional advantage of enhanced political entry to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its ties with Israel," remarked Filis. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more inclusive, more measured, more determined to show the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The extent of the Greek demonstration campaign has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the nation's diplomatic department warned visitors to remain inconspicuous, while national news outlets described Athens as a "paradise lost" due to protest markings appearing on structures in the downtown area.

The secretary-general of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece shared apprehension: "Of course we're worried. The sort of rhetoric we're experiencing can rapidly transform into antisemitic."

Future Developments and Demands

Progressively, critics have aimed at Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to demand the closure of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO facility that since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza has functioned as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, military jets and vessels headed to Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," declared an anti-racist coordinator. "Our main demand, at present, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
