British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
